Why Are People Apathetic Towards Personal Growth Development

As someone keenly involved in the personal growth development movement, the apparent apathy of the majority of people towards the subject has been worrying me of late. I have been continually asking myself why? Are people more interested in 'the material' than in their own self?

As I recall, none of my extended family have ever expressed a desire to improve themselves. Neither have any of my friends and coleagues from over all the years, ever expressed such a desire.

I embarked upon an open university course to study the environment from 1999 - 2004, but did this improve me as a person? Beyond the field of study, I don't think so, I was only educating myself. Self improvement wasn't the agenda anyway.

I suppose people assume they will become wiser and a better person as they get older, or don't they even think of it at all?

Even if someone does think they wish they were a better person, it's so easy to say "but this is the way I am" and accept the status quo.

I remember, whilst in regular business for someone else, I never considered that I needed self improvment studies. When you are in full time employment, perhaps with kids to look after, meals to cook, a house to clean, or a game to catch on TV, where is the time for self indulgence?

Because that's exactly what introspection is - a form of self indulgence.

Yet in google, many people are searching and looking to improve...

Who are these people, 225,000 searches out of a world population of 6.785 billion (as of Sept 09), is no great percentage. Is it that introspection only occurs when one has free time on hand?

Certainly the greatest self-thinker of all time - Buddha - who was a noble prince, had the time for introspection because he was privaleged and beyond subsistence living when he started his life long journey.

If we look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs* we may begin to see the answer.

Deficiency needs must be met before an individual can focus on higher needs. The necessity to house, cloth and feed ones family has to be achieved firstly before any other need.

It is not until the fifth growth need of Self Actualization that an individual can focus on introspection. People in self actualization have a psychological drive for personal growth, they are the seekers of knowledge. Maslow himself thought that only 2% of the world's population were predominantly self actuating.

So unless you are a student where you may be exposed to the idea of personal development when young, you will probably be in your 50s, where the kids have flown the nest, or when you have achieved your position in life, that you will be attending to your growth needs. :)

What Maslow recognised is only human nature; the hierarchy is a natual progression through which we all must strive, where some will never go beyond their Physiological and Security needs because of external influences. But what I am asking is - why wait this long before introspection and self evaluation? Cannot we recognise the importance of the characteristics of personal development goals before we enter the second half of our lives...

You see, I don't think people are apathetic, they are just too busy living their lives to see beyond their immediate needs.

What if instead you leave the money untouched for thirty years? Still investing $100 per month, the investment pool will have grown to $121,997.10. Not bad. Let’s see, we put aside $100 per month for 360 months, which would be $36,000. But our $100 a month investment earns almost $86,000, more than double the amount we put in!

How much would be there if the program runs for 40 years? The investment pool is now up to $262,481.34. Let’s see, we put aside $100 per month for 480 months, which would be $48,000. But our $100 a month investment earned almost $215,000! $262,500 invested at 7% would give an annual income of $18,375 per year without touching the investment pool. If only social security were so good.

If you start at 20, at 60 you can have that income. Starting at 30 would allow withdrawal at 70. 40 would be at 80, etc. It is easy to see that the earlier the program is started, the earlier you can withdraw. Just $200 a month, beginning at 50, will give you almost $244,000 at age 80 when you would really need it. (What could happen if we were able to invest even more?)

Richard Russell in his newsletter, Dow Theory, gives the example of a 19 year old who opens an IRA with $2,000 at an average growth rate of 10% (7% interest plus growth). After seven years this fellow makes no more contributions. A second investor waits until age 26 (seven years later). He also makes $2,000 contributions but he continues to do so faithfully until age 65 and gets the same return. Our first investor ends up with more money than the investor who contributes for the entire time. The compounding effect of the additional 7 years is phenomenal.

Note for Grandparents: Think about what would happen if you funded a Roth IRA for $2,000 per year for your grandchild for seven consecutive years and the money grows untouched until the grandchild is 55 years old. If the investment began at age 5, it would have grown to hundreds of thousands of dollars!

Let’s take a look at this from a different angle, especially if you don’t have enough money to invest. Most people have the expectation of working from the time they are 25 until at least 55 years old. Assuming a good education, many people would expect to make an average of $50,000 per year over that work life.

Total Years Worked: 30

Average Earnings per Year: $50,000.00

Total Money Earned: $1,500,000.00

Most People will have saved: $30,000.00

Amount Spent: $1,470,000.00

It is unlikely that any of us given $1,500,000 would give away $1,470,000 and only keep $30,000. Amazingly though, when we don’t plan to accumulate wealth from the earliest part of our income generating careers, that is exactly what happens.

Let me tell you a quick story of my friend Bob. A few years ago, when he was 45, Bob said to me that he would like to go to law school, but if he did, he would be 48 when he finished in three years. I asked him how old he would be in three years if he didn’t go to law school.

Step One: Dissect A Past Transformation:

It's easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about the process of making a personal overhaul. Therefore, it's important to break this idea down to its least common denominator. To begin, recall if you can a positive transformation you've made in your life. It could be as simple as beginning and staying with an exercise program. In your mind locate and focus on one specific personal transformation.

Next, break down your transformation into its components: mind, body and spirit. I tend to look at everything in this tri-fold sense. I believe it is important to see the way a particular event contributes to the growth of each component. Right now, take a moment to observe the ways each of these components have contributed to your transformation:

Mind: Was your mind committed to making this positive change?

Body: What daily actions did it take to make this personal transformation effective and permanent?

Spirit: Was there a spiritual component at hand guiding you toward your positive goal?

Step Two: Begin The Uncovering Process:

Now that you've dissected a previous transformation, the uncovering process is simple. This process asks you to take some time with your journal and uncover a new personal transformation you would like to experience. With pen in hand, take time to make notes to yourself. Start small. This involves one of the most difficult, yet necessary practices: finding time for silence. Finding time is the challenge I most often face when looking at my own personal growth and aiming to find ways to simplify and speed up the process.

Silence. Why does it work? From a physics or scientific standpoint, the electrons within the molecules of the body actually speed up when the body slows down. It seems difficult to understand at first, but the key is its reciprocal process. When the body slows down, the energy surrounding the body and passing through the body speeds up, literally directing the body: instructing it.

Grace, balance and growth are often natural extensions of this process. When you take some time to be still and offer your goal up to the universe, you can then become aware of the divine direction. To do this, try to first become aware of your surroundings. Then aim to find time each day to move toward your worthwhile goal. Keep it close to your heart. Know that there are many distractions in life, but if you take time to rest and stop for one moment, it could be the moment you will receive your greatest inspiration.

Before you assume that this information does not apply to you because you think you are not a leader, let me suggest that everyone is a leader at some level. From CEO of a Fortune 500 company, to parenting, to leading your own life, the principles and skills are the same. Without Transforming Leadership Skills, organizational and personal success levels will be compromised.
Leadership is lacking across almost all cultures and countries at all levels of our lives. This is very frustrating for many of us.

Here are a few examples of lack of leadership.

- Parents who will not or cannot discipline or lead their children
- Organizations that play to the politically correct agenda, rather than having the courage to do what is required for success
- Special-interest and lobby groups getting special treatment
- HR departments who play not to lose, rather than playing to win
- Union members unwilling to stand up against poor union leadership
- Political leaders unable to make difficult or unpopular decisions
- Leaders who make it all about themselves, instead of the institution they are serving

And on it goes . . .

In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins confirmed that the most successful organizations have what he calls Level 5 Leaders.

Before I outline these skills and attributes, here are a couple of examples of leadership in motion.

- Four years ago, the private school my kids were attending was struggling. It was losing students to other schools; there was infighting among society members; the financial statement was in the red.

That all changed in just a couple of years after 80% of the board was replaced. Within weeks of that election, a new style of leadership -- Transforming Leadership -- was established

Don’t misunderstand. The previous board members were well meaning and had a strong commitment to the success of the school, but they lacked Transforming Leadership Skills. It was hard for them to make difficult decisions, such as reducing staff and holding faculty and society members accountable for their conduct. Their power-brokering and self-centeredness shifted the energy toward each other instead of on the operational issues of the school.

The school is now enjoying growth in a very positive and student-focused environment. (I am one of the new board members.)

What changed? The leadership style!

- In the second example, one of our clients is going through the process of merging with another organization to create a billion-dollar operation. But it was the leadership of the CEO that made this opportunity happen. Initially, the board members of the two organizations were not open to the idea of a merger. They looked at all the things that could go wrong and did not have the courage to make the hard decisions. Only the leadership shown by the CEO caused this opportunity to come to fruition.

What is Transforming Leadership?

- Transforming Leaders get results and are catalysts to achieving results.
- They display a compelling modesty and are never boastful.
- They demonstrate an unwavering resolve to do whatever must be done to produce the best long-term results, no matter how difficult.
- They act with unassuming calm, yet reflect a confident determination.
- They take full responsibility for poor results, never blaming other people or external factors.
- They give credit for success to others, while setting up successors for even greater success.
- They know who they are and where they are going; they are personally and professionally on purpose.
- They get the right people on the team to build a superior lineup.
- They are passionate about what they are doing.
- They set and keep values and inspired standards to motivate, not ego or charisma.
- They confront the brutal facts of the current reality, whatever that might be.
- They and the team retain absolute faith that they can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.
- They communicate clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization.
- They hold everyone accountable for their respective results and role in the success of the company.
- They understand the what, when, why, and how of available resources, such as knowing how technology can serve the organization to achieve its results.
- They embrace an organizational and professional work culture of discipline and remove any team member who does not adhere to this value.

It takes many components to make a successful leader but the foregoing list outlines some of the primary skills and attributes of a Transforming and Level 5 Leader.

Remember: These principles apply to family situations and small associations, just as much as they do to large corporations.

Leadership that is effective and that gets results does not happen by accident or without courage.

Your Mind and How it Works

Your mind has two parts: the Conscious Mind and the Subconscious Mind. Together these two parts control all of your actions and ultimately the results you have in your life. As we explore each area of your mind, understand that while these ideas may seem simple and elementary, they have a wide reaching and profound affect on your life. They control every aspect of what makes you who you are and will continue to control everything in your life until the day you die.

The Conscious Mind

The Conscious Mind is where you do all your day to day thinking. This is where you make decisions and where you primarily operate from in normal life. When you hold a conversation or watch a t.v. program you are using your conscious mind. Both the conscious mind and the subconscious mind think in pictures. If you think about your family members a picture of them will flash on the movie screen of your conscious mind.

You also can only hold one image on the screen of your mind at a time. For example you cannot think of a red apple and an orange in detail at the same time. While you might be able to project them side by side you are not able to see the grain in the skin of the apple or the dimples in the peel of the orange at the same time.

This ultimately means that you cannot think of a negative idea and a positive idea at the same time. While your mind might be able to flip back and forth between negative and positive ideas or images very rapidly, it is not able to hold those two images at the same time.

The Subconscious Mind

Most people would think that the Conscious Mind controls the Subconscious Mind, but this is not so. The Subconscious Mind is the real mover and shaker in our lives. The Subconscious Mind stores all our beliefs about who we are, what we are capable of, what we are not capable of and every other detail we believe to be true about the world. We can refer to the Subconscious Mind as the emotional mind.

The subconscious mind operates in the background of your life and while you sleep. Dreams are a product of your subconscious mind. You can think of the subconscious mind as a computer program running without your help at all times. An example of this would be when you have suddenly realized that you have not been paying attention while driving and you are almost home from work.

The entire drive to and from work is a program that you have put into your subconscious mind through repetition. Your driving is almost automatic and takes very little thinking on your part. In fact without consciously thinking about going to the store when driving that pathway you will drive straight home. Your programming will take over and you will "forget" to go to the store unless you hold the image of the store at the forefront of your mind when driving home.

To convert the things you want in your life to reality you must understand how to use both your conscious and sub-conscious mind. By continually thinking about the good things you want and visualizing these images you will impress them on your subconscious mind. Over time your actions will change and you will start to move the things you want into your reality.
