A Personal Development Plan For Building Confidence

Many life and personal growth coaches highly recommend creating a personal development plan to help you overcome limiting beliefs and start building a better life - but not many actually cover the steps you need to take to develop your plan. Which is a shame as it is a relatively easy and painless task - if you know how to go about it.

Have you ever wondered what makes successful people successful? And why they actually reach the pinnacle of their careers and earn top dollar, while you seem to struggle even to make a decent living?

The way I see it is this - the people who are able to achieve their goals and ambitions in life, with relative ease are much less inhibited, and even totally un-inhibited.

So why should this be? Why is it that some people feel less inhibited than others? What is their secret? Simple really - when they discovered strategies for coping with situations that worked well for them, they repeated those strategies constantly until that behaviour became second nature.

Successful people have learned the behaviours they need to achieve their goals, and they practice them on very regular occasions. So much so, their old, limiting behaviours have all but been eliminated from their life, and their new empowering behaviours and now the norm.

If it's possible for people to learn how conquer their negative and dysfunctional feelings and frustrations, you can learn how to do it too.

If these people have learned how to remain calm and relaxed when they get into winning positions in sport, so can you.

If professional speakers can learn how to overcome their fear of public speaking, and present themselves in a manner which leaves their audience wanting more, so can you.

Successful people weren't always successful - they learnt how to become successful. So if people can learn how to overcome their frustrations and focus on the actions they need to achieve their ultimate goals and ambitions - so can you.

If you can dedicate 5 to 10 minutes each day to practising some simple NLP techniques, you can start to take control of your fears and frustrations and turn them into positive and empowering emotions.

NLP - or Neuro Linguistic Programming - in its simplest form is basically a method to help you control your thoughts and reactions in any given situation. When you experience negative emotions, like fear or nerves or anxiety, you are reacting negatively to that situation. NLP provides a mechanism that shows you how to take those negative reactions, and turn them round into positive and functional reactions that will start to empower you.

To help you get started, there are two very simple exercises that you can start practising right away:

1. Firstly, you need to notice when you react and feel negatively about as many situations and events as you can. So every time you feel nervous, or anxious, or fearful about something, make a note of what it was that made you feel that way, and exactly how you felt about it.

In order to start tearing down the barriers that are standing in your way, you need to know exactly what those barriers are.

2. Exercise 2 is even easier. Simply make a list of all the negative behaviors and feelings that you want to eliminate from your life. Write them all down - every last one. This list is a work-in-progress - keep adding to it every time you think of or experience another emotion you want to rid yourself of. At the same time, make a note of exactly how you would like to feel most of the time. Again, write it down and describe how you feel and what it means to you to feel that way.

These may seem like simple exercises - and they are - but don't let that you put them off for another time. Take a few minutes and do them now. The more details you have here, the more functional and empowering your personal development plan will be, and the more positive and driven your future will be.
